It’s that time of the year again and we can’t be happier! I know you feel the same way! I can finally go outside with a light pair of pants and a tee shirt on, slip into my favorite sandals and enjoy a nice walk around my neighborhood. It’s spring — and it feels like it, too! Aside from strolling through parks, getting some gardening in, and sorting my plans out for the summer, I also enjoy springtime for all the yummy fruits that are available at the grocery store; cantaloupes and watermelons being a couple of them!
Last week we shared some tips on how to pick the perfect watermelon. This week we’re back with some more tricks for you to enjoy delicious fruit, and this time we’re going to talk about choosing the right cantaloupe or honeydew melon.
Although we feel that we’re choosing the right fruit each time we go to the grocery store, sometimes it’s harder to identify a ripe one from the ones that still needed some more time on the patch. It’s also easier to identify some fresh and ripe fruits over others.
For example, you can tell that an avocado is ready to eat when the skin turns dark green, almost purple. A mango is at it’s best when you can dig your finger in just enough that it’s not too hard or too mushy — it’s about finding the right balance. Although these fruits are easy, it’s hard to say with cantaloupe. Often times, you’re in for a surprise when you’re home and ready to dig into that fruit platter.
One of the ways you can tell that a cantaloupe is ripe enough to buy is by judging it by the color. If the outside is still on the greener side, then you know that you should probably skip that one and opt for another cantaloupe. Always choose the ones that are more beige. These are the ones that have had the perfect amount of time on the patch, in the sun. They will also be the sweetest ones of the batch!
